Former Bellator champion, Emanuel Newton, has tested positive for marijuana and has been suspended by the organization for three months.
Unlike its counterpart the UFC, Bellator took quick and decisive action in order to make clear it’s no tolerance policy for failed drug tests.
Newton lost is light-heavyweight title last month to Liam McGeary at Bellator 134, and one could wonder if these results have anything to do with it. Newton lost via unanimous decision in what was his third attempted title defense. It was his first loss in seven fights. McGeary is still undefeated.
The Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulations, which regulated the event, suspended the ex-champ 90 days and fined him $3,000 according to MMA Junkie. He has seven days to appeal this decision.
Newton will have to re-apply for a license, and submit a clean test result in order to be given a license.
MTDAR Director Mike Mazzulli said a pre-fight urine test aroused suspicion and another test was taken in which 100 ng/mL of marijuana metabolites were found in his system.
Newton, McGeary, Brennan Ward and Josh Diekmann were all tested, only Newton failed.
Bellator has yet to comment.
